Silly Mistakes

Leaving Boca is a little sad for us but this time I didn't find it was as bad. Looking forward to getting on the road again. The hotel we stayed at for the third time is a little worse for wear than it was. It is still for sale and I don't think the present owners are putting any money into it. Everything about half works maybe.

We befriended a couple of nice young Chilean girls on the boat back to Almirantes. we caught the buses to the border together and crossed to CR but then they said they were going to hitchhiker. We seen them coming down the hill from immagracion as we were leaving in the bus. They were unable to hitch so ended up 45 minutes after us on a bus to Puerto Viejo. I said to Lou I bet they end up at Rocking J`s. and low and behold we bumped into them in PV and guess what, they had hammocks at Rocking J`s for $3 dollars a night. They are travelling on the cheap cheap. We invited them to stop and see us in Guatemala. We are both doing a similiar trip.

We got a nice room with the creakiest bed. Every time you rolled over you woke yourself and bed mate up.

We left Puerto Viejo this morning at 7am caught the bus on the side of the road which was better than the terminal because we got seats and avoided the rush. Some people had to stand for the 5 hour trip.

Pulled into the terminal in San Jose and now we had to figure out which bus terminal we had to go to for tomorrows trip to Managua. Since we were taking Tica Bus I figured it would be the Tica Terminal. There are over 20 bus terminals here and they all go somewhere different.

An enterprising taxi man grabbed us and confirmed the terminal and took us to a good pension $40 dollars but very clean and we are the only ones here. Taxi man was $4 dollars and I tipped him $4 dollars because he was honest and friendly.Helped restore my faith in my fellow man. Taking a taxi from a bus terminal is something I don't normally do. Like to get away find a cafe have a coffee and check out the internet first on my own if I havent done so before.

Tomorrow we are scheduled to stay with out first couchsurf host. Her place is not convenient but we fill oblidged. Never know could be good.

At the house we have here in San Jose we can use the laundry so we jumped on that and washed our dirties. Didn't have too many which is a good thing as there is no useable dryer. We have the clothes drying on these suspended hoistable racks but down here things don't dry too quick. Silly mistake ,like we didn't know that, but the house has 2 washing machines side by side so what would you think. Right, washer - dryer combo. We are hoping our clothes will dry over night but have gathered extra plastic bags incase.

Had a craving for some chicken soup of all things so we found a Nicaraguan Restaurant and had some Gallina sopa. Hope food is better in Managua. Made with an old hen, corn, yucca, plantain, squash, real horrible dough ball. Was way better in Peru.

The soup has already taken revenge on Lou
Tomorrow we are off for the border. Bus leaves at 6AM we have to be there at 5:15. Should be able to sleep on the bus as it is 6 hours to the border then a couple of hours crossing and 2more hours to Managua. Here is our directions to our host

It will be a pleasure.
The room is small, you have to accommodate and ask to be let out clean please. To get home: Managua-Masaya Highway Km 15.2 off Managua. Leaving Managua, go to the roundabout for Ticuantepe (Km 14). Continue straight towards Masaya until a sign "Mobil" up the road, on the right. Just before the km 15.2 (indicated in green sign), just after a blue gate and before the building of a large company, into a small dirt road on the right. If you come with the bus Granada, Masaya or Nandaime, say down to "Chamorro" and cross the road. From the Huembes market, it costs 9 cordobas and is on the same side of the road. Follow this road about 30 meters to enter another small dirt road on the right. Follow this dirt road about 30 meters to a high green gate on the left. Ring the bell No. 2 and if not answered at No.1. Ask for Elizabeth. If you need a taxi, call René 84 74 January 79 or July 88 86 62 58 and negotiate price on my part. They know the house and are honest. 82 61 80 50 Movistar to contact me

Wish us luck we are going to need it, think I should just call Rene if I can figure out how to use and find a phone.

Back in Boca

Sitting in our AC room here in Boca Del Toros. This is our 3rd time here. Guess we kind of like it.Lou found some cold liter box white wine for $3.75 with acceptable taste and I grabbed a couple of local Balboa $.88 beer. And yes we do deserve it after the heat we endured.

Left Manzanillo at 8am and got to Puerto Viejo just in time to catch the bus to Sixoala. Took about an hour and a half to get to the border at Sixoala and cost about @2.70 each.

No problem at the border in Costa Rica, paid our 6bucks exit and off to the bridge for the walk across the water to Panama.

On the Panama side things were slower but speed up a bit once we got in the right line. They have one for coming and one for going. From the border you have to get to Chinguaola about 20km. Usually you take a shuttle for  big ones bus we lucked out and caught the bus for a single George. Then you grab the bus to Almirante.

That bus was sitting there waiting for us so 10 minutes later we were on the road again. Never waited more than a few minutes for any bus.Now this bus driver either had the runs or had taken speed because he did one hell of an imitation to an Indy racer on these narrow twisting hilly roads filled with hairpins, switchbacks, cutbacks and all kinds of other configurations. The comfort one could take was in the crucifix dangling on a string of cheap plastic multicoloured beads suspended from the driver's rear view mirror.

Arriving in Almirante requires a short hike down an alley to the launch docks 6 bucks each and off we went by speed boat to Boca and here we are in our AC planning tomorrow and a trip to Red Frog Beach over in Isla Bastimentos.

Read the Instructions

We did not  get to the house in Gandoza. Got to Manzanillo  and discovered it was about $75 US by taxi  and $80 by boat. Boat was more reasonable since the road into Gandoca is a dirt road and may be really rough. All in all we figure for something this hard to get to and the fact that it was a real whim to do , we passed on the extra time and money and decided to go to Boca Town instead.,

The hostel here is for sale and for a younger pair than us this could be a fun business. lots of potential. Have to kick out all the American hangerons.

As I mentioned last blog, we stayed in a hotel because our cs(couchsurfer) guy bombed out. Finding it a little hard to arrange these stays.

We are planning on leaving here tomorrow morning for Puerto Viejo then on to Sixoala and to Boca Town. there is a farmers and craft market tomorrow in Puerto V tomorrow so we will take that in early.

It is kind of interesting retracing your travel footsteps . Two favourite places are Manzanillo and Boca Town. Changes occur but are slow which to us is nice. Tired of change anyway. Wish the world went back 30 years. Met another Trump supporter, they are coming out of the woodwork. Wanna piss a republican off, tell'em Obama did a great job inspite of all the Republican racial opposition.

Hot as Hell but Feeling Better

Plane ride was uneventful. Delayed out of Niagara but to be expected.Ended up in San Jose and caught the bus downtown for a total of $2 compared to taxi $30. We have decided to take more taxis. They are cheap here and we are older, besides I don't have strangers to argue with on fb much but I get some exercise with taxi drivers.

We were both congested and extremely tired, felt like shit. Slept most of the afternoon on arrival. Think that helped.

Thought I had booked a room close to the terminal for bus to Manzanillo but the internet was wrong, they moved 3 tears ago. After our second taxi ride we got to the right terminal and fortunately got tickets for the 5.5 hour ride that took 7hours (road construction). I thought back to the smoking days and would have figures the 15 minute stops a bonus. Thought of our friend Cheryl and how we would have seen the silver lining.

We are now in Manazanillo at the same hostel as last time here. Hasn't changed much just more expensive, $30/ talked down from 40.

Our room in SJ was $20/ and we found out later a gay guy was murderer there a week earlier.

Off to see the house tomorrow and then on to Boca Town

One Day Away

Well we have made our list checked them twice and will probably do it all again before leaving. It is amazing the stress you put on yourself worrying whether you forgot anything. other than the most significant like tickets, schedules, info, what else is there. Oh yeah passports. Lou is downstairs vacuuming for the 10th time this week. I think she figures the extra vacuuming now will make up for the absence of 2 month of vacuuming.

Have nearly nothing in the fridge to eat. The cupboard is bare. Already planning to take in a Thai reastaurant in Guelph called Na-Ha. Problem is the eat in part is not
heated. Food is great and prices are more than reasonable. https://www.zomato.com/guelph-on/na-ha-thais-kitchen-guelph

The plan for tomorrow is to pick Andy up from work at Guelph and head to Niagara Falls. Going to have a few hours to kill as our flight is not until 2:30am on Wednesday, but that's why they make 24 hour Walmarts.

Starting to get anxious to get going. Oh by the way, got our Travel Insurance from Bridges Internatioal Insurance http://www.biis.ca/ for me $256 and Lou $169 for 2 months. Mine is more due to my A-Fib and penis.( Gender ).

Just weighed our packs. Mine came in at 18.6 pounds and Lou's pack was 11.6 pounds. Now add about 8 pound for computers and CPAP machine and we should be set to go.Always want to stay under 22 pounds for me if possible and 15 pounds for Lou.

Time to go and do the check lists again . Gonna need that hammock and porch.

Week To Go

It's Tuesday - a week away

Just one more week and we will be off.Getting the camera and equipment prep. Loading music on new small laptop we bought for the trip. Got it at Factory Direct for $149.00 so if it's stolen or lost no biggy.

Starting to seriously look into travel insurance. Lou got a new Mastercard which carries 30 days of med coverage/year but only 15days per trip.Probably looking at $550.00in addition. Just got a price from Nomads for $529.86 tax incl.$541.72 +tax from TourMed. Will have to decide tomorrow. Nomads looks the better , also get insurance to cover personal items such as camera etc. Thinking of taking my CPAS machine(anti-snoring for sleep apnea) so it would be covered as well.

Lou bought some nice clothes for the trip from the local boutiques and I dont need any so just some little gifts for our couchsurfing hosts and stuff for kids and we should be good to go.

Things we still have to do

1. Arrange ride to airport  - our son (our good son) is giving us a ride to Niagara Falls Airport

2. Buy insurance - in process

3. Put Cinnamon (sons car) out of her misery - Sell to wrecker - tomorrow

4. Drain hot tub ( probably Sunday)

5. Get hold of handyman to check evetroughs

6. Retrain Curtis on how to restart water

7. Pack bag and double check also select footwear

8. Check all equipment and medical stuff

9. Check we have passports, tickets etc.

10. Say goodbye to all give love and kisses (maybe one more sleep over for Isaac)

11. Don't worry about getting money (Lou's job)

12. Don't worry about anything (Lou's job)

Got a lot on list done then got an additional list (Lou's addendums). Also tried to confirm the travel insurance with Nomads. Read the fine print only to find out it was for 60 and under. Bummer. Sucks getting old.

Here we come Central America 2016

So this winter we are heading to Central America with the first stop being San Jose,Costa Rica. Got a really good deal with https://www.spirit.com/. Sometimes they have great deal. A friend from Elmira told me about them. Our flight for both of us one way with tax and a checked bag was $144 us.

May be staying with a couchsurfer in San Jose the first night before we grab the bus.We will be doing some couchsurfing if it works out. If you haven't heard of this look here https://www.couchsurfing.com.

We will be heading south east to the Caribbean side via Limon and Puerto Viejo and on to the Gandoca Natural Reserve http://costarica.com/attractions/gandoca-manzanillo-national-wildlife-refuge/ to look at a house for sale http://www.viviun.com/AD-208551/ and explore an idea to develop a turtle rescue operation. More a pipe dream than anything else but gives a good purpose and excuse to go this far south and maybe jump on over to Boca Town in Panama .www.bocasdeltoro.com

We have our bus tickets from San Jose to Managua, Nicaragua. You have to show how you are going to exit when you enter Costa Rica plus Spirit Air checks so they don't get fined.

Thats the first leg of the journey. The plan as of now is to head to Nicaragua then through El Salvador and end up in San Pedro, Lake Atitlan,in Guatemala for the month of February and on to Mexico City and Cancun to fly home some time in late March. Here is our rental  in Guatemala .http://www.tripadvisor.com/VacationRentalReview-g313833-d8520021-Casa_Merrell-San_Pedro_La_Laguna_Lake_Atitlan_Solola_Department_Western_Highlands.html
